As President of the French Republic during the First World War, Poincaré navigated complex diplomatic terrain. He sought to solidify the Franco-Russian alliance through repeated visits to Russia in 1912 and 1914, intending to counter German influence. Following his tenure as President, he returned to the executive branch as Prime Minister on three separate occasions, notably overseeing the 1923 Occupation of the Ruhr to demand German reparations.
Professional Honors and Final Years
Poincaré served as a member of the Académie Française, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Romanian Academy. His international standing was reflected in numerous accolades, including the Knight of the Order of the Elephant, the Order of the White Eagle, and the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. He spent his final years in Paris until his death in 1934 and was interred at the Nubecourt City Cemetery.
