Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan became the youngest cricketer to captain a Test match team at 20 years and 350 days old during a match against Bangladesh in September 2019. Born in 1998 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, he emerged from a background defined by regional conflict to dominate international cricket as a right-arm leg spin bowler and aggressive right-handed batsman.

Early Development and Education

Born into a Shinwari Pashtun family, Rashid grew up in Nangarhar and spent part of his childhood in Pakistan after his family fled the Afghan war. His family managed a tyre business in Jalalabad. During his youth, he refined his bowling action by mimicking Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi. He attended Islamia College Peshawar, where he studied computer science while leveraging his athletic abilities to gain admission. His rise to prominence began in 2014 during domestic matches held in Peshawar.

Rise in International Cricket

Rashid made his international debut in October 2015 against Zimbabwe. He gained rapid recognition for his bowling efficiency, notably taking 7 wickets for 18 runs against the West Indies in June 2017. By February 2018, he secured the top position in ICC Player Rankings for both ODIs and T20Is. During the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, he set a record as the fastest and youngest bowler to reach 100 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in 44 matches.

Test Match Career

In June 2018, Rashid participated in Afghanistan's inaugural Test match against India. Although his debut performance saw him concede 154 runs, he later became the first Afghan bowler to secure a five-wicket haul in a Test match during a 2019 encounter against Ireland. His leadership credentials were established early when he became the youngest player to captain an international team at 19 years and 165 days old during the 2018 World Cup Qualifier.

Franchise Leagues and Accolades

Beyond his national team duties, Rashid is a consistent presence in global T20 leagues. He has represented the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, and MI New York in Major League Cricket. His performance at the 2018 Asia Cup elevated him to the top of the ICC all-rounder rankings. In 2020, he was named the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Decade.
