Raman Hui Shing-Ngai graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1984 before emerging as a major force in computer animation. His career spans decades of technical development, transitioning from cel animation at Quantum Studios to a long-term role at Pacific Data Images, where he shaped the visual identity of several globally recognized film franchises.
Early Career and Move to North America
After completing his graphic design degree, Hui began his professional life as a cel animator in Hong Kong. In 1989, he relocated to Canada to undertake a three-month course at Sheridan College focused on computer animation. During this time, he contributed to television commercials in Toronto. Shortly thereafter, he joined Pacific Data Images, a studio later acquired by DreamWorks Animation.

Hui served as a supervising animator and lead character designer for the 1998 production Antz. He continued his work with DreamWorks on the Shrek series, acting as the supervising animator for the initial 2001 film and its 2004 sequel. His animation credits also extend to feature films such as Madagascar and the television series The Simpsons, specifically the Treehouse of Horror VI episode.
Directorial Work and Filmography
Hui transitioned into directing with the 2007 release Shrek the Third, which he co-directed. His portfolio includes various short films, such as Sleepy Guy and Fat Cat on a Diet. He later directed the films Monster Hunt and Monster Hunt 2. More recently, he directed the 2024 feature The Tiger's Apprentice. In 2004, he spent six months overseeing animation for the series Father of the Pride.
Literature and Recognition
Beyond film, Hui illustrated children's storybooks including Brownie and Sesame, Piccolo, and Grandma Long Ears to raise funds for Hong Kong organizations. His contributions to the industry led Forbes to name him one of 25 notable Chinese-Americans in the business field in 2010. He is also a recipient of the Bronze Bauhinia Star.
