Early Career and Outsiders
Born in Huntington, New York, in 1961, Macchio began tap dancing at the age of three. His professional career launched with a Bubble Yum commercial in 1980, followed by a casting as Jeremy Andretti in the final season of Eight Is Enough. In 1983, he gained critical attention as Johnny Cade in the Francis Ford Coppola adaptation of S. E. Hinton's novel, The Outsiders. Macchio achieved widespread recognition for his role as Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 film The Karate Kid, performing alongside Pat Morita. He reprised this role in The Karate Kid Part II and The Karate Kid Part III. Decades later, he returned to the franchise in the series Cobra Kai, which aired from 2018 to 2025. This project explored the long-term history of the original characters, leading to his involvement in the 2025 film Karate Kid: Legends alongside Jackie Chan.

Beyond his work as LaRusso, Macchio appeared in the 1986 film Crossroads and the 1992 comedy My Cousin Vinny, playing Billy Gambini.
