Political Development and Exile

In 1981, he established the Islamic Tendency Movement, later known as the Ennahdha Party. His political advocacy for pluralism and economic reform led to multiple arrests and imprisonment under the Tunisian state. Following years of domestic volatility, he spent two decades in the United Kingdom, living in exile for 22 years before returning to Tunisia in January 2011 after the departure of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Legislative Leadership and Consensus

Following the 2011 revolution, Ennahdha emerged as a dominant force in the Constituent Assembly. As a political leader, Ghannouchi engaged in consensus-building, notably signing a 2013 roadmap to facilitate a transition to a technocratic government. His tenure as Speaker of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People concluded in 2021, following a period marked by significant challenges and internal parliamentary tensions.

Professional Recognition

His work in political analysis and the exploration of political aspects of Islam earned him various international accolades.
