Early Development in Nigeria
Born in 1988 in Oyo, Nigeria, Aruna began his athletic development within the local sporting infrastructure. During his time at Oba Adeyemi High School in Oyo State, he represented his school, the Oyo East Local Government Area, and the state in various table tennis competitions. Aruna represented Nigeria at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Summer Olympics. His 2016 campaign included a significant victory over Timo Boll before he faced eventual gold medalist Ma Long. Outside of the Olympics, he reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup and the 2021 World Table Tennis Championships in Houston. The International Table Tennis Federation recognized his rise in 2014 by naming him the Star Player of the Year, the same year he participated in the Nigerian team that secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Regional Dominance and Club Play
The rivalry between Nigeria and Egypt has shaped much of Aruna's regional career. He won the 2017 ITTF African Cup after defeating Omar Assar, though he placed second to Assar in the 2018 edition.
