The music video for Gangnam Style became the first on YouTube to surpass one billion views, cementing its creator as a global cultural phenomenon. Released in 2012, the track propelled the South Korean rapper and producer, born Park Jae-sang, from domestic notoriety into the upper echelons of the international Billboard Hot 100 chart rankings.

Early Education and Creative Shift

Born on December 31, 1977, in the Gangnam District of Seoul, Park Jae-sang grew up as the son of an executive at DI Corporation. His trajectory shifted from business administration to music after he abandoned his studies at Boston University in 1996. He subsequently enrolled at the Berklee College of Music, though he left before graduating to return to South Korea and pursue a professional career as a performer.

Domestic Success and Regulatory Hurdles

Entering the industry in 2001 with his debut album, Psy from the Psycho World!, he quickly earned the moniker The Bizarre Singer due to his blunt lyrics and unconventional stage presence. His early work faced significant scrutiny from South Korean government authorities, with his first two albums receiving fines and sales restrictions for being deemed inappropriate for minors. Despite these challenges, he achieved domestic acclaim, notably with his 2002 hit song Champion.

Mandatory Military Service

The artist faced a protracted period involving South Korea's mandatory military service laws. After an initial exemption based on his technical work, he was required to re-enlist in 2007 following accusations that he neglected his obligations. He served as a signalman in the 52nd Army Infantry Division before completing his tenure in July 2009.

Global Expansion and Entrepreneurship

Following financial instability, he joined YG Entertainment in 2010. His international breakthrough arrived with the release of his sixth album, Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1. Beyond his recording work, he established the talent agency P Nation. His career includes receiving the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit and various YouTube engagement awards, including the Diamond Play Button.
