Platon Leonidovich Lebedev, a key figure in the Russian oil sector, spent over a decade imprisoned following his involvement with the holding company Group Menatep. Early Career and Banking
After graduating from the Plekhanov Russian Economic University in 1981, Lebedev spent eight years working at Zarubezhgeologia, a department of the Soviet Ministry of Geology. During this tenure, he encountered Leonid Nevzlin, who facilitated his introduction to Mikhail Khodorkovsky. In 1989, Lebedev moved to Khodorkovsky's Bank Menatep, where he led the currency and finance department. By 1993, he attained the role of president, maintaining that title until 1995. This transition marked his entry into the elite circle of Russian business leaders during the post-Soviet privatization period.

By 1996, Lebedev served on the board of the oil firm Yukos. He also became the chief executive officer of Group Menatep Ltd, which acted as the principal shareholder of Yukos. Holding a seven percent stake in the firm as of 1997, he managed assets alongside other primary owners including Leonid Nevzlin, Mikhail Brudno, Vladimir Dubov, and Vasily Shakhnovsky. Group Menatep maintained control over 51 percent of Yukos shares, positioning Lebedev at the center of Russia's energy industry before his legal challenges began.
Legal Proceedings and Imprisonment
In July 2003, authorities arrested Lebedev while he was hospitalized, citing allegations related to the theft of a stake in JSC Apatit. In 2005, a court convicted him of tax evasion and issued a nine-year prison sentence. Subsequent charges followed in 2009 regarding embezzlement and money laundering. In December 2010, Lebedev and Khodorkovsky received 13-year sentences for the alleged theft of 218 million tonnes of oil from subsidiaries Uganskneftegaz, Tomskneft, and Samaraneftegaz. Following various appeals and sentence reductions, including a term reduction in Velsk in 2012, the Russian Supreme Court ordered his release on 24 January 2014.
Post-Release Status
Following his release, Lebedev remained subject to a court order requiring the payment of 17 billion roubles in tax arrears. He held his first public press conference in Moscow in February 2015. Throughout his incarceration, international organizations including Amnesty International monitored his cases, naming him and Khodorkovsky prisoners of conscience in 2011. While the Berlin International Literature Festival held events in his solidarity during 2013, Lebedev stated after his release that he intended to resume his business activities.
