Pierre Omidyar

The online auction platform known as eBay began as a simple coding experiment on a personal website in 1995. Pierre Omidyar, a computer scientist based in the United States, developed the software to facilitate person-to-person trade. The service rapidly expanded from a hobby project into a global marketplace, fundamentally altering consumer habits through the digital exchange of goods.

Formative Years and Education

Born in 1967 in Paris, France, Omidyar spent his childhood in the United States. His formal education included attendance at the Potomac School, St. Andrew's Episcopal School, and finally Tufts University. He completed his degree in computer science at the Tufts University School of Engineering in 1988. His professional trajectory began with technical roles at Claris, an Apple Computer subsidiary, where he contributed to software updates. He later co-founded a pen-based computing startup called Ink Development, which shifted focus to e-commerce and became eShop Inc. before its 1996 acquisition by Microsoft.

The Development of eBay

In 1995, Omidyar wrote the initial code for an online venue to host direct auctions. Originally named AuctionWeb, the service launched on September 4, 1995. The platform gained traction as users began listing diverse items, notably starting with a broken laser pointer. By 1996, the site had hosted 250,000 auctions and secured a licensing agreement for airline tickets. He officially adopted the name eBay in 1997. The company went public in September 1998, with Omidyar serving as chairman until 2015.

Journalism and Philanthropy

Beyond e-commerce, Omidyar established the Omidyar Network with his wife, Pamela, in 2004. His interest in public affairs led him to found Honolulu Civil Beat in 2010, an online service dedicated to investigative reporting. Following the 2013 disclosures by Edward Snowden, Omidyar financed First Look Media, a journalism venture that produced The Intercept in 2014. Additionally, he served as an executive producer for the films Merchants of Doubt and Spotlight, while maintaining active involvement in his philanthropic group and various board memberships.
