Pierre de Meuron

Swiss architect (born 1950)

The architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron, co-founded by Pierre de Meuron in 1978, emerged from a long-standing collaboration between two classmates from Basel. The firm gained international prominence by repurposing industrial structures and designing major civic landmarks, including the Tate Modern in London and the Beijing National Stadium, which serves as a centerpiece for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Formative Years and Academic Foundations

Born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1950, Pierre de Meuron completed his architectural studies at ETH Zurich, graduating in 1975. During his time at the institution, he studied under Aldo Rossi, who, along with artist Joseph Beuys, became a significant influence on his conceptual approach. His academic career led him to roles as a visiting professor at Harvard University starting in 1989 and as a full professor at ETH Zurich from 1999 until 2018.

Urban Research and Territorial Planning

Beyond traditional building design, de Meuron focused on the study of contemporary urban transformation. In 1999, he co-founded the ETH Studio Basel in collaboration with Roger Diener and Marcel Meili. This institute analyzed urbanization trends and the concept of the city region, culminating in research documented in the publication The Inevitable Specificity of Cities. His commitment to territorial planning is further illustrated by projects such as Ronquoz 21 in Sion, the Bahnknoten Basel infrastructure expansion, and the Cargo Sous Terrain underground freight initiative.

Professional Methodology

De Meuron integrates photography into his work to analyze the practical utility and performance of completed structures. His approach to architecture considers history, geopolitics, and social psychology alongside technical execution. As the firm has grown, he managed the long-term succession planning to transition ownership to an expanded partner group. His membership in the Académie d'architecture reflects his sustained engagement with the architectural discipline.
