Early Development and Training
Before entering the film industry, Coffin studied cinema at the Paris-Sorbonne University between 1985 and 1988. During his mandatory military service, he prepared for the entrance examination at Gobelins, the Parisian animation school. He completed a 2D animation course at the institution from 1990 to 1993. Following his studies, he relocated to London to work for one year at the Amblin facility as a junior animator on the Steven Spielberg-executive-produced project We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story.

Upon returning to France, Coffin transitioned into CGI animation at the studio Ex Machina. His roles evolved from animator to animation supervisor, establishing his technical foundation in the medium. He initiated his directing career with the 1997 short film Pings. Subsequently, he collaborated on commercial projects with Passion Pictures Paris and Mac Guff, and developed the characters Pat & Stan for a TF1 television series.
The Despicable Me Franchise
Coffin achieved international recognition through his work with Universal and Illumination. He co-directed the feature CGI film Despicable Me in 2010 alongside Chris Renaud. His directorial credits continued with Despicable Me 2 in 2013, the spin-off Minions in 2015 with Kyle Balda, and Despicable Me 3 in 2017. Beyond directing, he serves as the primary voice actor for the Minions, recording various dubs for international releases. He continued this work in later installments, including Minions: The Rise of Gru, Despicable Me 4, and the 2026 release Minions & Monsters.
Recent Ventures
In April 2023, development was announced for two webseries, Who's Who and Bones Story, planned for distribution on platforms including TikTok and YouTube. These projects represent a shift in the distribution format for his creative output.
