Retail Business Ventures
Harris gained initial prominence as the chairman and chief executive of Harris Carpets. In 1977, the firm acquired Queensway, rebranding as Harris Queensway plc before the company was taken over in 1988. He later served as chairman of Carpetright plc, a tenure that concluded in 2014 when he liquidated his shareholdings. By 2024, his involvement in the flooring sector resumed through Tapi Carpets, which acquired the intellectual property and name of Carpetright, allowing him to assume the role of Honorary President for both brands.

He held a position as a non-executive director for Great Universal Stores plc for 18 years, concluding his tenure in July 2004. In October of that same year, he joined the board of the retailer Matalan as a non-executive director. His involvement in sports management began in November 2005, when he accepted an appointment as a non-executive director at Arsenal Football Club.

Knighted in 1985, Harris later entered the House of Lords on 11 January 1996 as Baron Harris of Peckham. A long-time donor to the Conservative Party, he has supported leaders including Margaret Thatcher, David Cameron, and Michael Gove, though he supported the Labour Party during the 2024 general election while retaining the Conservative Whip.
