Philémon Yunji Yang held the office of Prime Minister of Cameroon for nine years, nine months, and three days, establishing a record as the longest-serving individual in that position. His tenure spanned a decade of significant administrative transition, following a lengthy period representing his country as a diplomat abroad before returning to the centre of domestic government operations.
Early Career and Diplomatic Service
Born in Jikejem-Oku, in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, Yang studied law at the University of Yaoundé. He initially worked as a prosecutor at the Buea court of appeal. His executive career began in 1975 as Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration. In 1979, he transitioned to the role of Minister of Mines and Energy, a post he occupied until 1984. Following his departure from the cabinet, Yang spent two decades in Canada. He served as Ambassador from 1984 to 1995 and subsequently as High Commissioner until 2004, following Cameroon's entry into the Commonwealth of Nations. During this period, he acted as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Canada for a decade and led negotiations for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

President Paul Biya appointed Yang as Prime Minister on 30 June 2009, replacing Ephraïm Inoni. This appointment occurred during a substantial cabinet reshuffle that eliminated six portfolios and introduced new leadership across several ministries, including defence and communication. The restructuring was interpreted as a strategic response to domestic economic grievances and preparation for the 2011 presidential election. Prior to this appointment, Yang served as Assistant Secretary-General of the Presidency and chaired the board of directors for the Cameroon Airlines Corporation. He concluded his tenure as Prime Minister on 4 January 2019.
United Nations Presidency
In 2024, Yang moved to the international stage when he was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly. He assumed the presidency for the seventy-ninth session, spanning from 10 September 2024 through 9 September 2025. This position represents the culmination of his extensive diplomatic history, transitioning from national ministerial responsibilities to presiding over the primary deliberative organ of the United Nations.
