Academic Foundation
Pálfy attended the Fazekas Mihály Gimnázium during his formative years. He subsequently enrolled at Eötvös Loránd University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1978. His doctoral-level academic progress culminated in 1997 when he attained his DSc degree. Throughout this period, he maintained a consistent association with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Upon his graduation in 1978, Pálfy commenced his professional activities at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics. He held the position of deputy director at the Institute from 1991 until 1997. His academic career expanded in 2000 when he accepted a full-time professorship at Eötvös Loránd University, a post he held for five years before returning to the Rényi Institute as director in 2006. During his twelve-year tenure as director, he simultaneously served as a part-time professor at Eötvös Loránd University.
Recognition and Membership
Pálfy became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2004 and achieved the status of a full member in 2010. His mathematical research has been acknowledged through several honors, beginning with the Paul Erdős Prize in 1994. He received the Szele Tibor commemorative medal in 1999 and the Rényi Alfréd Prize in 2000. In 2020, he was awarded the Széchenyi Prize for his contributions to the field.
