Peter Mutharika

Arthur Peter Mutharika assumed office as the seventh president of Malawi in 2025 at the age of 85, marking his second non-consecutive tenure as the nation's head of state. A career legal scholar and diplomat, he transitioned into national politics in 2009 after decades of teaching law at institutions across the United States, Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Academic and Legal Foundation

Born on 18 July 1940 in Thyolo District, Mutharika pursued extensive legal education before entering public office. He graduated from the University of London in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in law. He subsequently earned a master's degree in law and a doctorate in Juridical Science from Yale University by 1969. Admitted to the bar in Tanzania in 1971, he established a global academic career. He spent 37 years at Washington University in St. Louis and held positions at institutions in Ethiopia, Uganda, and the United Kingdom, focusing his research on international economic law and comparative constitutional studies.

Early Political Involvement

Mutharika entered the Malawian political landscape in 2009 by winning a seat in the National Assembly for the Thyolo East District. Under the presidency of his elder brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, he held several cabinet portfolios, including Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, and Minister of Foreign Affairs. His rise within the Democratic Progressive Party occurred amidst internal tensions regarding presidential succession, particularly following the fallout between the executive branch and Vice President Joyce Banda.

Presidential Tenure and Elections

Mutharika served his first term as president from 2014 to 2020 after defeating Joyce Banda and Lazarus Chakwera. This period saw inflation drop from 24% in 2014 to single digits by 2019, alongside the construction of community colleges and various infrastructure projects. Although he secured a victory in the 2019 election, the results faced legal challenges, leading to an annulment by the Supreme Court of Appeal. He lost the subsequent 2020 rerun to Lazarus Chakwera. In 2025, he returned to power by winning the presidential election, defeating the incumbent Chakwera.
