Péter Magyar

Hungarian lawyer and politician, Prime Minister of Hungary since 2026

Péter Magyar assumed the office of Prime Minister of Hungary in May 2026, marking a significant transition in the nation’s governance following the 2026 general election. His administration emerged after a period of intense political activity, during which he shifted from a former Fidesz insider to the leader of the Tisza Party, ultimately securing a supermajority victory at the polls.

Early Background and Education

Born in 1981 in Budapest, Magyar was raised in a family deeply involved in law and public service. He attended the High School of Piarists before pursuing legal studies at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, graduating in 2004. During his academic career, he also spent time at Humboldt University in Berlin as part of the Erasmus Programme. His family connections included prominent figures in Hungarian judicial and political circles, including his godparents, former President Ferenc Mádl and his wife Dalma Mádl.

Career Within the Fidesz Era

Magyar began his professional life as a lawyer, gaining early exposure to political activism by assisting anti-government demonstrators during the 2006 protests. After Fidesz achieved power in 2010, he transitioned into state roles. He served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union, and the Prime Minister’s Office. By 2018, he moved into the financial sector, managing the EU Legal Directorate at MBH Bank before serving as CEO of the Student Loan Center from 2019 to 2022.

The 2024 Political Shift

Political prominence followed the February 2024 presidential pardon scandal involving Katalin Novák. Following the resignation of Novák and former Justice Minister Judit Varga, Magyar distanced himself from the government. He publicly criticized the administration’s focus on wealth transfers and corruption. He subsequently resigned from his state-owned enterprise positions and leveraged social media and high-profile interviews to challenge the established political order, specifically targeting Cabinet Minister Antal Rogán over the Schadl–Völner corruption case.

Ascension to Premiership

Taking control of the Tisza Party, Magyar positioned the group as a distinct alternative to Fidesz. Under his leadership, the party gained significant momentum, finishing second in the 2024 European Parliament election where he served as an MEP. Following the 2026 general election victory, he initiated systematic reforms to disassemble the System of National Cooperation. His current mandate includes imposing term limits, removing various government appointees, and pursuing closer diplomatic ties with the European Union and Ukraine.
