Academic Formation and Early Appointments
Born in Munich in 1942, Janich completed his university studies at the University of Hamburg and the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg. Janich held several significant faculty roles throughout his career. Between 1973 and 1980, he served as a professor for the philosophy of science of exact sciences at the University of Konstanz. In 1980, he transitioned to the Philipps University of Marburg, where he occupied the chair for systematic philosophy with an emphasis on theoretical philosophy until his later years. He also held membership within the Academia Europaea.
Methodical Culturalism and Protophysics
A central architect of the Erlangen School of constructivism, Janich pioneered the approach known as methodical culturalism. Working alongside colleagues Paul Lorenzen and Rüdiger Inhetveen, he contributed to the development of protophysics. These frameworks aimed to address the fundamental relationship between the sciences and human culture, providing a structured approach to the philosophy of science that remained a focus of his research throughout his tenure in Marburg.
