His 1986 album So became his commercial peak, producing the single Sledgehammer, which achieved widespread recognition on MTV. Beyond his musical output, Gabriel co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982 to promote global musical traditions. He established Real World Studios in Wiltshire to support world music production. An early proponent of digital music distribution, he helped start the download service OD2. His humanitarian work includes supporting Amnesty International tours, co-creating the organisation Witness in 1992, and helping to develop The Elders in 2007.
