Early Business Ventures
Born in 1955 in Coburg, Melbourne, Stoddart attended Preston Technical School and St Joseph's College. Before entering the aviation sector, he operated a car dealership and managed a vehicle detailing business. He later expanded his interests through European Aviation, an airline established in 1994 following negotiations with British Airways and the procurement of additional aircraft.

Stoddart entered Formula One by purchasing a 1990 Tyrrell 019 car in 1996 and sponsoring the team in subsequent years. He attempted to acquire the Tyrrell team in 1997 for 25 million dollars, though the bid failed when British American Tobacco purchased the outfit. He later sponsored Jordan Grand Prix and the Arrows team before buying Minardi in 2001.
Leading Minardi
Under his ownership, Minardi operated with limited financial resources. Stoddart frequently advocated for budget caps and financial incentives for smaller teams, often engaging in public disputes with larger stakeholders. Notable drivers such as Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber competed for the team during his tenure. In 2005, he sold the operation to Dietrich Mateschitz of Red Bull Racing, leading to a rebrand as Toro Rosso.
Aviation and Racing Expansion
In 2005, Stoddart founded OzJet, an all-business-class airline that utilized three Boeing 737 aircraft. The venture transitioned into a charter service by 2006 before being sold to Air Australia in 2009. His involvement in motorsport continued through the purchase of the CTE-HVM ChampCar team in 2006, renamed Minardi Team USA, and the introduction of fan ride-along experiences in Minardi Fx2 cars starting in 2017.
