Paul Biya, the current president of Cameroon, has occupied his nation's highest office since November 1982. Born in Mvomeka’a in 1933, he emerged from the civil service to lead the country through its transition from a unitary state to a multiparty system. He remains one of the longest-serving political leaders in contemporary Africa.
Early Career and Education
Biya received his education at Sciences Po, the University of Paris, and the École nationale d'administration. During the 1960s, he built his reputation as a bureaucrat in post-independence Cameroon. He served as the secretary-general of the presidency starting in 1968 and attained the rank of minister of state by 1970 under President Ahmadou Ahidjo.

On 30 June 1975, President Ahidjo appointed Biya as Prime Minister of Cameroon. Following a legislative change in 1979 that established the prime minister as the constitutional successor to the presidency, Biya assumed the office of head of state on 6 November 1982, two days after Ahidjo's resignation. He later consolidated his power after surviving a military coup attempt on 6 April 1984.
Governance and Political Shifts
In 1985, Biya reorganized the Cameroon National Union into the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement. Under pressure in the early 1990s, he legalized opposition parties. Despite these structural changes, his administration has faced persistent allegations of electoral fraud from domestic and international observers during his consecutive terms. During his tenure, he also served as the chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 1996 to 1997.
