Patrick Ewing

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1962, Patrick Ewing emerged as one of the most significant figures in professional basketball through a multi-decade career as both a player and a coach. After moving to the United States in 1975, he cultivated his skills in Massachusetts before defining the center position during his long tenure with the New York Knicks.

Development and Collegiate Success

Ewing refined his basketball abilities at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School under coaches Mike Jarvis and John Fountain. He led his high school team to three consecutive state championships between 1979 and 1981. Upon transitioning to Georgetown University, he became a central figure under coach John Thompson. During his four-year collegiate career, he led the Hoyas to the NCAA championship game three times, securing the national title in 1984 while earning Most Outstanding Player honors.

Professional Basketball Career

Selected as a high-profile recruit, Ewing spent 17 seasons in the NBA, most notably as the starting center for the New York Knicks. He earned eleven All-Star selections and seven All-NBA team honors during his time in New York, where the team reached the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999. Following his lengthy tenure in New York, he finished his playing career with one-season stints at the Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic.

Coaching and Continued Involvement

Beyond his playing years, Ewing transitioned into coaching within the NBA. He currently serves as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards. His professional contributions have been recognized through various honors, including the 2006 Great Immigrants Award and his induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2014. He remains active in the sport, utilizing the expertise gained from his extensive athletic background.
