Early Development and Education
Born on 2 March 1993 in the Bidayuh village of Kupuo Jugan, Bau, Sarawak, Pandelela began her path in athletics at the age of seven. She attended the Bukit Jalil Sports School to refine her training as a state diver. Pandelela made her international debut at the 2007 Asian Junior Aquatics Championships, securing four gold medals. She participated in her first Olympics at the 2008 Beijing Games at age 15. Her rise continued at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where she won the 10m platform event, the first gold medal for Malaysia in an aquatic sport. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, she teamed with Cheong Jun Hoong to win the silver medal in the 10m synchronized platform.
Institutional Recognition and Awards
The Sarawak State Government honoured her achievements by renaming the aquatic centre in Petra Jaya the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre following her 2016 Olympic success. Disciplinary Challenges
In June 2018, Pandelela and six fellow national divers faced scrutiny after a video surfaced showing them consuming alcohol at a training camp in Guangzhou, China. The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia temporarily suspended the allowances of the involved athletes. All individuals issued public apologies, and the union subsequently confirmed that no further disciplinary actions would be pursued.
