Early Education and International Training
Heim earned his medical degree from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest in 1897. Seeking broader clinical exposure, he moved to Vienna to further his studies. He eventually exited the Austro-Hungarian Empire to pursue advanced work in Breslau, which was then located within the German Empire. During this period, he gained practical experience at the clinic of Adalbert Czerny. His international education continued with subsequent medical placements in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

After serving as a doctor during the First World War, Heim assumed leadership of a hospital dedicated to the care of infants in Budapest in 1916. His tenure there was marked by organizational improvements, specifically the creation of a specialized network of nurses who attended to infants. This group became known as the Heim Sisters. His professional influence expanded when he joined the faculty of the university in 1918, later serving as rector in 1921.
University Positions and Final Appointment
Heim transitioned to the University of Pécs in 1918, where he remained until 1929. In the autumn of 1928, the retirement of his former mentor, János Bókai, led to an invitation for Heim to oversee the department of pediatrics in Budapest. Although he was reluctant to depart from his established position in Pécs, he accepted the role. His time in this new capacity was brief, as he died from pneumonia just months after his appointment.
