Otto Schmidt worked in astronomy at a period when the field was still deciding what counted as an answer.
Otto Schmidt was born at Mahilyow in 1891. His recorded nationality is Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. He was educated at Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Kyiv University and Mogilev Male Gymnasium.
Around the turn of the twentieth century the sciences fractured into specialisms and simultaneously became national assets, funded and directed on a scale no earlier generation had seen.

He held appointments at Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Chief Directorate of the Northern Sea Route and Imperial University of St. Vladimir, where the work centred on astronomy, geography and geophysics.
Among his principal works are Great Soviet Encyclopedia, Krull–Schmidt theorem and Northern Sea Route. Astronomy is built from patience and arithmetic, since nothing it studies can be brought closer or repeated on demand.
Working from Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic shaped what was possible. Access to instruments, collections, journals and colleagues has always been geographic, and the history of science is partly a history of that inequality.
Major works and recognition
His work was formally recognised with the Order of the Red Star, Order of Lenin and Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
Scientific legacy and death
Read now, the significance is less in any single result than in the fact that the results held. Astronomy is cumulative, and a contribution counts if the next generation could stand on it.
Otto Schmidt died in 1956 at the age of 65. The work outlived the debates that surrounded it, which is the only durable form of scientific success.
