Early Training and Education
The youngest of four children, Otto Brückwald began his formal entry into the construction trade in 1857 by apprenticing as a bricklayer. A scholarship enabled his transition to higher academic study, leading him to the Royal Academy in Dresden, where he studied from 1860 until 1863. Beyond his professional practice, he joined the Minerva zu den drei Palmen Masonic lodge in Leipzig in 1868.

Brückwald gained significant experience early in his career through his work on the Neues Theater in Leipzig. Serving as the site manager and lead planner, he assisted on the project from 1864 to 1868 under the design direction of Carl Ferdinand Langhans. The structure, which was later destroyed during World War II, established his capability for large-scale public commissions. Following this project, he assumed responsibility for the Hoftheater in Altenburg, completing the structure between 1869 and 1871.
Legacy and Death
Throughout his tenure, Brückwald completed various structures throughout Leipzig. His career occurred during a period of rapid industrialization that introduced new materials and structural challenges to German architecture. He died in his home city of Leipzig on 15 February 1917 at the age of 75.
