Starting his solo career in 1982 with the album "Pub", Balašević expanded his repertoire as a singer, writer, and composer. His work throughout the 1980s, including albums like "Celovečernji the Kid", "003", and "Bezdan", established him as a major regional figure. Collaborating closely with producer Đorđe Petrović and arranger Aleksandar Dujin, he developed a distinct sound. His 1987 double live album, "U tvojim molitvama – Ballads", captured performances from across Sarajevo, Zagreb, Belgrade, and his home city of Novi Sad.

Balašević gained recognition for his critical perspective toward the Slobodan Milošević regime. He served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and performed in Sarajevo following the city's siege, making him the first Serbian artist to do so in the aftermath of the conflicts. His career included recording 14 albums and authoring 8 books. He remained a resident of Novi Sad throughout his life, living on Jovan Cvijić street until his death in 2021 at the age of 68.
