Odoardo Focherini

Italian resistance fighter (1907-1944)

One hundred and five Jewish lives were saved through the covert operations of Odoardo Focherini before his 1944 death in the Hersbruck concentration camp. A journalist by trade and a resistance fighter by conviction, Focherini operated within the Kingdom of Italy to facilitate the escape of persecuted individuals across the border into neutral Switzerland.

Early Life and Journalism

Born in Modena on 6 June 1907 to parents Tobia Focherini and Maria Bertacchini, Odoardo Focherini pursued a career in both business and media. After working as an insurance agent for the Società Assicurazione Cattolica di Verona starting in 1934, he transitioned to journalism. He eventually became the managing director of the publication L'Avvenire d'Italia. In 1936, he assumed the role of diocesan president for Catholic Action, a position that led to him receiving the Order of Saint Sylvester from Pope Pius XI in 1937.

Resistance and Arrest

Focherini initiated his efforts to rescue Jewish people in 1942. Following September 1943, he worked with associates to procure blank identification cards, which he filled with false data to assist those fleeing persecution. Alongside his friend, the priest Dante Sala, he secured passage for individuals including his fellow journalist Giacomo Lampronti. Nazi authorities arrested Focherini on 11 March 1944 at the Carpi Hospital while he coordinated the escape of Enrico Donati. He was subsequently detained at the San Giovanni in Monte prison before his deportation to the Flossenbürg camp and finally to Hersbruck.

Legacy and Beatification

Focherini died on 27 December 1944 from an untreated leg infection. His efforts were formally recognized in 1969 when Yad Vashem bestowed upon him the title of Righteous Among the Nations. In 2007, President Giorgio Napolitano awarded him the Gold Medal for Civil Merit. His cause for beatification, initiated in 1996, concluded on 15 June 2013 with a ceremony in Modena presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Francis, following the recognition that Focherini died in hatred of the faith.
