Born in Tel Aviv on 23 November 1970, Oded Fehr is the son of Gila, a day care supervisor, and Uri Ernst Fehr, a geophysicist and marketing executive. His upbringing was rooted in an Ashkenazi Jewish background. Before committing to the performing arts, he completed a service period in the Israeli Navy from 1989 to 1992 and maintained employment providing security for the national carrier, El Al.

Fehr moved to Europe to refine his craft, first attending a drama class in Frankfurt, Germany. He later gained formal professional instruction at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England.
