Nikolai Yaroshenko

Russian/Ukrainian painter (1846-1898)

Nikolai Yaroshenko successfully navigated the rigid hierarchies of the Russian Empire, serving as a career military officer while simultaneously establishing himself as a foundational member of the Peredvizhniki art movement. Retiring with the rank of Major General, he balanced high-level administrative duties at the Saint Petersburg Cartridge Factory with a prolific output of realist genre paintings and portraits.

Military Education and Early Career

Born in Poltava in 1846 to an officer of the Imperial Russian Army, Yaroshenko followed an expected path into the military. He attended the Poltava Cadet Corps from 1855 before transferring to the First Cadet Corps in Saint Petersburg. By 1863, he enrolled in the Pavlovsk Infantry School, later graduating from the Mikhailovskaya Artillery School in 1865. His early service in the 9th Artillery Brigade preceded his enrollment in the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy.
