Nikolai Bukharin

Russian revolutionary and politician (1888–1938)

Nikolai Bukharin, born in 1888 in Moscow, emerged as a pivotal Marxist theorist and revolutionary figure within the Soviet state. Throughout his career, he navigated the complex transition from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union, occupying central roles in political decision-making and economic theory until his eventual purge and execution during the late 1930s.

Early Education and Political Development

Bukharin attended the First Moscow gymnasium before enrolling in the Faculty of Law at Moscow Imperial University in 1906. His political activities began during this period, leading to his membership in the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. His early years were marked by imprisonment and internal exile to Onega, followed by an escape abroad in 1911 that facilitated his connection with other exiled Bolshevik leaders.

Political and Editorial Influence

After returning to Moscow in 1917, Bukharin became a central figure in the party hierarchy. Between 1917 and 1929, he served as a member of the editing staff for the newspaper Pravda. His administrative reach expanded significantly when he held positions as a candidate member of the Politburo from 1919 to 1924, followed by a full seat on the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee from 1924 until 1929. He also served as a member of the Russian Constituent Assembly.

Economic Philosophy and Scholarly Work

As a writer, economist, and philosopher, Bukharin contributed extensively to Marxist thought. Beyond his journalistic work at Pravda and later at Kommunist from 1924 to 1929, he was an active scholar. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and contributed to the S.I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology. His mastery of Russian and German facilitated his engagement with diverse European revolutionary currents.

Final Years and Death

Bukharin’s involvement in the Soviet government concluded abruptly during the purges. Following his removal from key positions, his political influence waned until his arrest. He died in 1938 at the Kommunarka shooting ground near Moscow, where he was also buried. His life represents the trajectory of an Old Bolshevik who played a foundational role in the early Soviet apparatus before falling victim to the state he helped construct.
