Born in Glasgow in 1964, Niall Ferguson has established a career as an economist, historian, and university teacher. Academic Formation
Ferguson attended The Glasgow Academy before advancing to Magdalen College, University of Oxford, where he earned his doctorate. His early academic progression included research positions at the University of Cambridge between 1989 and 1992, followed by a decade-long tenure as a fellow and tutor at the University of Oxford starting in 1992. His career expanded to American and international institutions during the early 2000s. He served at New York University from 2002 until 2004, subsequently transitioning to Harvard University, where he held professorships from 2004 to 2016. Additionally, he held the Philippe Roman Chair in history and international affairs at the London School of Economics and Political Science during the 2010–2011 academic year. In 2016, he became a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.
Institutional Contributions and Awards
Beyond his teaching, Ferguson has contributed to the development of educational structures and policy. He assisted with history syllabus initiatives in the United Kingdom and was a co-founder of the University of Austin. His contributions to economic literature earned him the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Publications in Economics in 2013. In 2024, he was recognized with a Knight Bachelor for his services to literature.
