Shaffer Chimere Smith, professionally known as Ne-Yo, first emerged as a prominent songwriting force in 2004 through the success of Mario's single Let Me Love You. Early Development and Stage Name
Born on October 18, 1979, in Camden, Arkansas, Smith was raised by his mother, Lorraine, who later moved the family to Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts and Rancho High School. While participating in the local music scene, he performed under the name GoGo and joined an R&B group called Envy. The moniker Ne-Yo was later provided by producer Big D Evans, who likened Smith's musical intuition to the character Neo from the film The Matrix.

Following the dissolution of Envy in 2000, Smith pursued a solo path, briefly signing with Columbia Records before the label dropped him. His songwriting profile rose after Marques Houston recorded his track That Girl. In 2006, Ne-Yo released his debut studio album, In My Own Words, which achieved platinum certification by the RIAA and topped the Billboard 200. His hit single So Sick also reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
Grammy-Winning Success
His second studio album, Because of You, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2007 and won Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. His third release, Year of the Gentleman, yielded the singles Closer and Miss Independent, the latter of which earned him two Grammy Awards. The RIAA has credited him with selling 29 million certified albums and singles within the United States.
Television and Label Transitions
After departing Def Jam, Ne-Yo signed with Motown, where he served as a short-tenured label executive. His subsequent musical output included the albums R.E.D., Non-Fiction, Good Man, Another Kind of Christmas, and Self Explanatory. Beyond his recording work, he served as a judge on the reality series World of Dance from 2017 to 2020. He also competed on The Masked Singer UK as Badger and won the tenth season of the U.S. version of The Masked Singer as the Cow.
