The Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur transitioned under the leadership of Murphy Pakiam on 29 May 2003, when he was installed as the third metropolitan archbishop. Born on 6 December 1938 in Tapah, Perak, he spent decades navigating the intersections of religious practice and national administrative policy within the Malaysian Catholic hierarchy.
Early Formation and Academic Training
His ordination occurred on 10 May 1964. Following early pastoral work at the Church of St. Louis in Taiping and the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Penang, he pursued further studies at the Lateran University in Rome, where he completed a master's degree in moral theology in 1974. He later earned a Master's degree in Guidance and Counselling from De La Salle University in the Philippines in 1989.

Appointed auxiliary bishop of Kuala Lumpur and titular bishop of Chunavia on 1 April 1995, he was ordained later that year in Penang. In 2003, he succeeded Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez to lead the metropolitan archdiocese. During his tenure, he presided over the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. His active service concluded on 13 December 2013, following the acceptance of his resignation by the Pope.
Legal and Public Advocacy
As the publisher of the weekly newspaper The Herald, Pakiam engaged in a significant constitutional dispute regarding the usage of the word Allah. Following a government prohibition issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, he initiated a judicial review in 2007. The High Court ruled in his favour in 2009, with Justice Lau Bee Lan overturning the ban. Separately, in 2010, he accepted a public apology from Al-Islam magazine after reporters engaged in an act of desecration within a Catholic church.
