Sultan Muhammad V became the twenty-ninth ruler of Kelantan in 2010, succeeding his father, Sultan Ismail Petra. His subsequent tenure as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, which began in 2016, marked a significant period in federal politics, culminating in an unprecedented abdication from the federal throne in early 2019.
Early Development and Education
Born in Kota Bharu in 1969, he was known as Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra. His formative academic path included the Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, followed by studies at Oakham School in England. He later engaged in diplomatic studies at St Cross College, Oxford, and attended the European Business School in London. These international experiences preceded his formal induction into royal responsibilities.

Appointed as the Tengku Mahkota in 1985, he formally ascended to the role of Crown Prince two years later. When his father suffered a massive stroke in 2009, he served as the Regent of Kelantan. He was proclaimed Sultan of Kelantan on 13 September 2010, following the determination that his predecessor could no longer perform official duties.
Federal Leadership and Abdication
Elected by the Conference of Rulers, he became the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in December 2016. During his federal reign, he oversaw a major political transition in 2018, which saw the Pakatan Harapan coalition replace the long-standing Barisan Nasional government. He also granted a royal pardon to Anwar Ibrahim. His term ended prematurely when he abdicated on 6 January 2019.
Marital History and Public Life
His personal life has seen multiple marriages, beginning with Kangsadal Pipitpakdee in 2004, which ended in 2008. He married Jana Jakubková in 2010, who became Sultanah Nur Diana Petra Abdullah in 2022. A 2018 marriage to Oksana Voevodina ended in divorce by 2019. In 2025, reports emerged regarding a subsequent union with American citizen Brittany Porter, characterized by later claims of limited recognition.
