Morten Per Olsen, born in Vordingborg on 14 August 1949, holds a unique distinction in professional football history. Alongside Didier Deschamps, he remains one of only two individuals to participate in 100 international matches for his country both as a player and as a head coach, defining his career through an enduring presence at the sport's highest levels.
Early Development and Transition
Olsen began his football education in 1957 at a local club in Vordingborg. By 1970, at age 20, he transitioned to top-flight professional football with the Danish side B 1901. Originally operating as a right winger, he shifted to a central midfield role under the guidance of coach Kurt Nielsen. His international debut occurred in September 1970 against Norway, following a brief appearance for the Danish under-21 team.

In 1972, Olsen moved to Belgium to join Cercle Brugge, where he showcased extreme versatility by playing in every outfield position. He later joined Molenbeek before securing a move to Anderlecht in 1980. Under manager Tomislav Ivic, a severe shin injury in 1982 forced a tactical shift to the libero position. Here, he mastered an aggressive off-side trap, a strategy he later introduced to the Danish national squad.
International Performance and Coaching
Olsen served as the Danish national team captain for 50 matches during the 1980s. Between 1970 and 1989, he earned 102 caps and scored four goals, earning the Danish Player of the Year title in 1983 and 1986. Following his retirement from playing at 1. FC Köln in 1989, he transitioned into management. He led Brøndby to two league championships and guided Ajax to a double consisting of the 1998 Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup. From 2000 to 2015, he served as the Denmark head coach.
