Mongkut

King of Siam from 1851 to 1868

The total solar eclipse of 18 August 1868, later dubbed the King of Siam’s eclipse, confirmed the scientific acumen of the monarch who reigned over Siam from 1851 to 1868. Mongkut navigated an era of rising Western expansionism by embracing technological and cultural reforms, simultaneously shaping the international standing of his kingdom while maintaining traditional structures.

Early Life and Monastic Path

Born in 1804 at the Old Palace in Thonburi, Mongkut was the second son of Prince Itsarasunthon, later crowned King Rama II. Following the death of his father in 1824, he entered the Buddhist monkhood under the name Vajirayan. He spent twenty-seven years in the clergy, during which he traveled extensively and identified a decline in monastic discipline. This observation led him to found the Dhammayut sect in 1835, which focused on a strict interpretation of the vinaya.

Ascension and Diplomatic Stance

In 1851, following the death of King Nangklao, the nobility and influential figures, including the powerful House of Bunnag, supported Mongkut’s ascension to the throne. His transition from monastic life to the monarchy was secured with British backing. Upon taking power, he prioritized diplomatic stability, notably appointing his younger brother, Prince Chutamani, as the Second King, known as King Pinklao, granting him equal honors to ensure internal cohesion.

Modernization and Scientific Inquiry

Mongkut sought to modernize Siam by integrating Western geography, science, and languages. During his residency at Wat Bowonniwet, he studied English and Latin with missionaries, forming a notable friendship with Vicar Pallegoix. These interactions fostered a unique outlook on foreign influence, balancing admiration for Western advancements with a critical perspective on religious dogma. His reign solidified the adoption of the title King of Siam in official diplomatic communication.
