Early Development and Clube da Esquina
Nascimento was adopted by Josino Brito Campos and Lília Silva Campos, moving to Três Pontas in Minas Gerais. His musical foundation began at age four with an accordion. By 13, he was a crooner for the group Continental de Duilio Tiso Cougo. In 1963, a move to Belo Horizonte connected him with Lô Borges, sparking the Clube da Esquina movement. This collective, which included musicians such as Beto Guedes and Toninho Horta, released their eponymous album in 1972 after years of sharing compositions and melodies.

In 1967, Nascimento gained wider recognition after placing second in the Festival Internacional da Canção with the song Travessia. This event led to a recording contract with Creed Taylor, resulting in his 1969 album Courage. His international presence expanded significantly with his 1974 appearance on Wayne Shorter's Native Dancer. Throughout the subsequent decades, he collaborated with artists including Paul Simon, Sarah Vaughan, Pat Metheny, and the pop-rock band Duran Duran, with whom he recorded the track Breath After Breath in 1993.
Political Impact and Later Work
His composition Coração de Estudante became a significant social-political anthem, utilized during the 1984 Diretas Já campaign and performed at the funerals of Tancredo Neves and Ayrton Senna. In 2022, he concluded his touring career with the A Última Sessão de Música tour, performing his final show at the Mineirão stadium. He has continued to release music, including the 2024 collaborative album Milton + Esperanza with Esperanza Spalding, which earned a nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.
