Early Development and Maritime Education
Born in 1934 in Odesa, Mikhail Mikhaylovich Zhvanetsky spent his formative years in a family of medical professionals, with his father, Mane Moiseevich, serving as a surgeon and his mother, Raisa Yakovlevna, as a dentist. Following the disruptions of the Great Patriotic War, he completed his secondary education at school 118 for boys. He later pursued technical studies at the Odesa National Maritime University, training as an engineer and mechanic.

Zhvanetsky began his literary engagement by co-founding the Parnas-2 amateur theater in Odesa with Victor Ilchenko. His professional trajectory shifted significantly in 1964 when Arkady Raikin recruited him to lead the literary section of his troupe. This transition allowed his monologues and sketches to gain prominence on stages ranging from the Odesa Philharmonic to the Hermitage Theatre. By 1978, he had secured membership in the Union of Soviet Writers.
Artistic Leadership and Television Career
In 1988, he established the Theater of Miniatures in the Tverskoy district of Moscow, where he served as artistic director. Beyond stage performances, he maintained a significant presence in media, most notably hosting the monthly program Guardian of the Country on Russia 1 between 2002 and 2019. His literary footprint was solidified in 2001 with the publication of a comprehensive four-volume collection of his works.
Recognition and Legacy
His contributions to arts and literature were recognized with various honors, including the People's Artist of Ukraine in 1999 and the People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 2012. He received the Order of Friendship of Peoples and multiple classes of the Order For Merit to the Fatherland. Following his death in Moscow in 2020 at the age of 86, he was interred at Novodevichy Cemetery.
