Mikhail Prokhorov navigated the transition from the Soviet-planned economy to private ownership by securing vast industrial assets during the 1990s. His involvement in the loans-for-shares privatization program transformed him into a significant figure in Russian metallurgy. Beyond his commercial ventures, he transitioned into politics and served as a high-profile sports official before eventually emigrating to Israel in 2022.
Early Career and Banking Foundations
Born in Moscow in 1965, Prokhorov graduated from the Moscow Finance Institute in 1989. His professional trajectory began at the International Bank for Economic Cooperation, followed by management roles at the MFK bank. By 1993, he co-founded the United Export-Import Bank, known as Onexim Bank, alongside business partner Vladimir Potanin. This institution acted as a depository for government funds, allowing it to serve as a paying agent for Finance Ministry bonds and manage external economic activities for the City of Moscow.

Prokhorov and Potanin established Interros, a holding company used to acquire state-owned enterprises. Through the loans-for-shares program, they gained ownership of Norilsk Nickel, a massive producer of nickel and palladium. The auctions allowed private lenders to obtain majority stakes in significant industrial companies when the government failed to repay debts. Prokhorov served as chairman of Polyus Gold and held positions within Nornickel until his departure in 2007.
Political Engagement
In 2011, Prokhorov entered the public political sphere as an independent candidate for the 2012 Russian presidential election, where he secured 7.98 percent of the vote. Following this campaign, he established the Civic Platform political party in June 2012. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with the Order of Holy Prince Daniel of Moscow, the Order of Friendship, and the Knight of the Legion of Honour.
Recent Status
As of December 2021, financial assessments placed his net worth between 11.5 and 14 billion US dollars. In April 2022, Prokhorov exercised his right under the Law of Return to become a citizen of Israel. He remains a figure defined by his early institutional roles within COMECON and his later shifts into international investment and independent political participation.
