Education and Early Career
Fridman graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1986 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. His initial professional role was as a design engineer at the Elektrostal Metallurgical Works, where he worked until 1988. During his student years in Moscow, he engaged in various commercial activities, including running a student discothèque and managing ticket queues to barter for rare goods.

In 1988, he founded a window-washing business and companies focused on computer sales and import-export operations. Alongside partners German Khan and Alexey Kuzmichev, he launched Alfa-Photo and eventually Alfa-Eco, which traded commodities. These ventures expanded into the Alfa Group Consortium. By the mid-1990s, the conglomerate had established a significant presence in the Russian economy, with Petr Aven joining the leadership of Alfa-Bank in 1994.
Retail and Investment Expansion
The group entered the retail sector in 1995 with the Perekrestok supermarket chain. In 2006, this merged with the Pyatyorochka chain to form X5 Retail Group, which grew through acquisitions such as Kopeyka in 2010. Beyond retail, Fridman served as CEO of TNK-BP for nine years before selling his stake in 2013 to co-found the international investment company LetterOne, which holds interests in telecommunications and energy.
Public Roles and Legal Scrutiny
Fridman held positions on the boards of companies including VEON and served on the Public Chamber of Russia. He is a recipient of the Russian Federation Presidential Certificate of Gratitude. In December 2022, he was detained by the UK's National Crime Agency in London regarding allegations of financial misconduct, but the agency closed the investigation in September 2023.
