Born in Vyazma in 1857, Mikhail Alekseyev emerged as a pivotal figure in the Imperial Russian Army, serving as Tsar Nicholas II's final Chief of Staff before orchestrating the transition to the Provisional Government. His career spanned the Russo-Turkish and Russo-Japanese conflicts, culminating in his leadership during the Russian Civil War as a founder of the anti-Bolshevik Volunteer Army.
Early Military Career
Alekseyev began his service as a volunteer in the 2nd Grenadiers Regiment in 1873. Following his graduation from the Moscow Infantry School in 1876, he received a commission in the 64th Kazan Regiment. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, he served as an orderly to General Mikhail Skobelev and sustained combat wounds near Pleven, Bulgaria. He rose through the ranks during the late 19th century, eventually attending the Nicholas General Staff Academy in 1893, where he later held a professorship in the history of military science.

In 1904, he became Quartermaster General of the 3rd Manchurian Army during the Russo-Japanese War. By the outbreak of World War I, he held the rank of General of the Infantry. Initially serving as Chief of Staff to the Southwestern Front, he planned offensives in Galicia. In 1915, he assumed the role of Chief of Staff of the Stavka, managing military operations under Tsar Nicholas II. Despite his efforts to modernize command structures, systemic issues related to patronage and the limitations of the Russian military hindered his strategic objectives.
Revolution and Civil War
During the February Revolution in 1917, Alekseyev coordinated communication between front commanders, ultimately advising the Tsar to abdicate. He briefly served as commander-in-chief under the Provisional Government. Later that year, he arrested General Lavr Kornilov to prevent internal armed conflict. Following the October Revolution, he fled to Novocherkassk. There, he helped form the Volunteer Army. In the final year of his life, he managed the organization's civil and financial affairs before dying of heart failure in 1918 in Krasnodar.
