Academic Trajectory
Abensour began his teaching career at the University of Burgundy in 1962, remaining there until 1964. He transitioned to the National Center for Scientific Research, where he worked from 1964 to 1980. After earning his doctorate in political science from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne in 1973, he served as a professor at the University of Reims between 1980 and 1990. He concluded his academic tenure at Paris Diderot University, serving from 1990 until 2003.

Beyond the classroom, Abensour shaped the dissemination of critical thought through his work in publishing. From 1974 to 2017, he operated as a collection manager, notably at Payot, where he oversaw editorial projects for over four decades. He also held the presidency of the Collège international de philosophie from 1985 to 1987 and later contributed his expertise to Klincksieck between 2016 and 2017.

Abensour identified as a theoretician of radical democracy. His body of work sought to distinguish Karl Marx’s philosophy from Marxism and investigated the history of utopian thought.
