Michel Sarrazin: The Surgeon Who Read New France's Wilderness

On a May morning in 1700, in the operating room of the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, Michel Sarrazin cut a tumor from the breast of a nun named Marie Barbier de l'Assomption — an operation that appears to be the first mastectomy performed in North America. She lived another thirty-nine years. It was one of hundreds of small, careful acts by which a modestly paid royal surgeon, stationed in a colony most of Europe considered barely worth the crossing, became, almost by accident, the first working scientist Canada produced.

From Burgundy to the Edge of Empire

Sarrazin was born on September 5, 1659, in the Burgundian village of Nuits-sous-Beaune (some records give the neighboring Gilly-lès-Cîteaux), the son of Claude Sarrazin, an official of the Abbey of Cîteaux, and Madeleine de Bonnefoy. He trained as a surgeon in France and, in 1685, took a post as surgeon to the King's troops in New France — a routine colonial posting that put him, within a year, in charge of medicine for the entire colony as its first surgeon-major. He later returned briefly to France, studying in Paris and Reims between 1694 and 1697 and earning a doctorate in medicine at Reims. There he also attended the Jardin Royal des Plantes under Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, the era's leading systematic botanist — an apprenticeship that reoriented the rest of his life. In 1699 he was named the colony's chief physician, a post that came with a modest annual salary (roughly 300 to 600 livres, far below what colleagues in Louisiana earned) and constant travel between the hospitals of Quebec and Montreal, in a country he described bitterly as harder to cross than all of Europe.

A Surgeon's Practice in a Frontier Colony

Sarrazin's medical career reads as a running inventory of colonial hardship. He managed a smallpox outbreak aboard the ship Diligente in the harbor of Quebec, treated the epidemics that periodically swept the Hôtel-Dieu, performed autopsies and gave expert testimony in criminal cases, and drafted a treatise on pleurisy that a later governor, La Galissonnière, praised. He served as apothecary and vetted candidates for surgical posts at the hospital, and by 1707 had been named to the colony's Conseil Supérieur, later becoming keeper of its seals. None of this made him rich: he lost money on a fishing partnership in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, sank capital into a slate quarry on his own land that turned out to be poor rock, and lost a house to fire. He died, in the words of one biographer, in comparative poverty, despite decades in royal service.

Correspondent of the Académie: A Naturalist by Post

What distinguishes Sarrazin from every other colonial surgeon of his generation is the second career he built entirely by letter. Tournefort's teaching gave him a bridge to Paris, and in 1699 he was formally named a correspondent — first to Tournefort himself, and after Tournefort's death in 1717, to the physiologist René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur. He also exchanged specimens and observations with the botanists Sébastien Vaillant and Antoine de Jussieu and with the Academy's secretary, the Abbé Bignon. For nearly three decades he shipped pressed plants, anatomical dissections and written observations across the Atlantic, asking for no recognition and getting relatively little in his lifetime — his herbarium specimens now sit in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and in Oxford's Sherardian Herbarium, quiet testimony to a working relationship that made him, in effect, the Academy's eyes in North America.

Reading the Land: Botany and Zoology in the Field

Sarrazin's scientific output has no single great book behind it — it survives instead as a mosaic of specimens, letters and short memoirs, many folded into other men's publications. He identified sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis) and in 1701 sent the Jardin du Roi its first sample of Canadian ginseng. He catalogued the purple pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea, and proposed — correctly, and more than a century and a half before Charles Darwin confirmed it in 1875 — that the plant digested the insects it trapped. He recorded Indigenous medicinal uses of native plants: Arum canadense for tumors, Aralia canadensis for ulcers, Aster species for seizures, Angelica canadensis as a sedative. On the zoological side he produced detailed anatomical accounts of the beaver, the muskrat, the porcupine, the harbor seal and the wolverine (Histoire anatomique du carcajou), work thorough enough that historians credit him with a better working grasp of Canadian maple species than Linnaeus himself would later have. He also strayed into applied science — analyzing mineral waters at Cap-de-la-Madeleine, testing imported Swedish winter barley, and documenting the maple-syrup process for the Academy in a paper later folded into Vaillant's Histoire des plantes de Canada (1708), the first published French botanical account of North American flora.

Linnaeus's Tribute

The clearest measure of how seriously Sarrazin's Paris correspondents took him is that Carl Linnaeus, compiling his global genus system decades later, named the pitcher-plant genus Sarracenia directly after him — a naming honor reserved for naturalists whose specimens and observations had genuinely advanced the science, not merely collected for it.

A Late Marriage and a Hard Widowhood

Sarrazin married late, at about fifty, taking as his wife Marie-Anne Hazeur, a young Quebec-born former Ursuline pupil and daughter of the prominent merchant and seigneur François Hazeur. The marriage brought him seigneurial land at Grande-Vallée and Anse-de-l'Étang, and seven children, three of whom died in infancy. He was, by the account of his Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry, "active, tenacious, conscientious, and upright," but also "nervous, distrustful, somewhat vindictive" — a taciturn, reclusive man capable, patients found, of real kindness. He died at Quebec on September 8, 1734, apparently of a malignant fever, leaving his widow a pension that lapsed within five years when their eldest son also died.

Why Michel Is Called a Genius

Sarrazin published almost nothing under his own name and would not recognize the label. What he had was something narrower and rarer for his circumstances: the discipline to observe methodically, in a colony with no scientific institutions, no colleagues, no library to speak of, and to keep observing for thirty years without an audience closer than three thousand miles away. His insight about the pitcher plant's carnivory — a genuine, testable hypothesis that took biology until Darwin to confirm — shows real inferential reach, not just diligent cataloguing. Historians of Canadian science have called him the "father of French Canadian science" and Quebec named both a palliative-care hospital and an annual biomedical research prize after him. But the Dictionary of Canadian Biography's own assessment is unsentimental: next to Tournefort or Vaillant, it says, he was "a modest, even limited researcher." His genius, if the word applies, was situational — an ordinary observational talent applied with unusual patience to an unmapped continent, which is exactly what let a busy, underpaid frontier surgeon rewrite what Europe knew about beavers, maple sap, and a small red plant that eats insects.

Legacy

Sarrazin's specimens still sit in Paris and Oxford; the genus Sarracenia still carries his name into every field guide that lists the pitcher plants. In Quebec, the Maison Michel-Sarrazin has provided palliative care since 1985, and the Prix Michel-Sarrazin recognizes biomedical researchers each year — a fitting inheritance for a man whose real laboratory was a colony he never stopped complaining about, and never stopped studying.
