Scientific Training and Early Interests
Born in 1757, Paccard obtained his medical training in Turin. His professional career spanned botany, medicine, and exploration, roles that frequently overlapped during the Enlightenment era. His interest in natural sciences led to an association with Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, a figure who encouraged explorers to carry scientific instruments to high altitudes. Paccard maintained a specific goal to transport a barometer to the summit of Mont Blanc to record atmospheric data.

Before his successful summit, Paccard engaged in various attempts to conquer the peak. He collaborated with Marc Theodore Bourrit in 1783, though this effort proved unsuccessful. By 1784, he transitioned to working with Jacques Balmat. The successful 1786 expedition took place without the aid of ropes or ice axes. Instead, the climbers navigated the terrain with iron-pointed batons and substantial scientific gear, relying on favorable weather and moonlight to complete the ascent and return safely.
Later Life and Legacy
Following his contribution to early alpinism, Paccard married the sister of his climbing partner, Jacques Balmat. He settled into public service, working as a justice of the peace. He remained in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc for the duration of his life and was also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin. He died in 1827 at the age of 70 and was buried in his hometown, where a statue currently stands in his honor.
