Michael Bolton

Michael Bolotin, professionally known as Michael Bolton, transitioned from hard rock beginnings in the 1970s to become a prominent pop ballad vocalist by the late 1980s. Born in New Haven in 1953, he built a career marked by significant songwriting collaborations, high-charting covers of soul classics, and a extensive string of adult contemporary successes throughout the 1990s.

Early Career and Hard Rock

Before reaching mainstream pop status, Bolton recorded under his birth name, Bolotin. During the 1970s and early 1980s, he fronted the band Blackjack, which toured as an opening act for Ozzy Osbourne. He also pursued songwriting for other artists, finding notable success in 1983 when Laura Branigan released his co-written track, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.

Commercial Peak and Legal Challenges

Bolton achieved significant recognition during the late 1980s and early 1990s with hits such as When a Man Loves a Woman, which earned him a Grammy Award. Despite selling over 75 million records, he faced professional challenges, including a 15-year legal dispute with the Isley Brothers over his 1991 song Love Is a Wonderful Thing. The case concluded with a $4.2 million payment to the original songwriters.

Multimedia Ventures and Philanthropy

Beyond his musical output, Bolton has appeared in film and television, including participating in Dancing with the Stars and producing the documentary American Dream: Detroit. He established The Michael Bolton Charities to support philanthropic efforts, though the organization has faced public scrutiny regarding its financial allocations. He holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
