A time of 29:53.80 over 10,000 metres on 14 June 2009 secured Meselech Melkamu a place among the fastest distance runners in history. This performance in Utrecht established a new African record and remains one of the few instances where a female athlete has successfully broken the 30-minute barrier in the event.
Early Athletic Success
Born in Debre Marqos on 19 April 1985, Melkamu emerged as a prominent junior talent during 2004. Her international ascent began with victories at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the World Junior Championships in Athletics, where she secured the 5000 metres title. By 2006, she transitioned into senior competition, earning bronze medals in both long and short races at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, while contributing to Ethiopian team gold medals.

Throughout the late 2000s, Melkamu maintained a consistent presence on the global stage. She secured a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2007 All-Africa Games and claimed the 5000 metres gold at the 2008 African Athletics Championships by defeating Meseret Defar. Her Olympic participation in Beijing in 2008 saw her finish seventh in the 5000 metres final with a time of 15:49.03. She frequently returned to the podium at the World Cross Country Championships, collecting bronze medals in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
Transition to Road Racing
Following a decade of track focus, Melkamu moved into road racing. Her debut marathon at the 2012 Frankfurt Marathon proved successful, as she finished in 2:21:01, establishing a new course record. Her road career also included an event-record win at the 2006 Great Ireland Run and a personal best in the half marathon of 1:08:05, achieved at the 2013 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates.
