The career of Kenyan long-distance runner Mercy Cherono took shape on the international stage in 2007, when she claimed a gold medal at the World Youth Championships in Athletics. Early Success in Junior Athletics
Cherono first appeared internationally at the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa. She established her track presence later that year by setting a championship record of 8:53.94 in the 3000 metres. By 2008, she secured the gold at the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, followed by a victory at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Her performance at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships yielded a silver medal after a tight contest against Genzebe Dibaba. Cherono returned to Bydgoszcz for the 2010 World Cross Country Championships, where she led a Kenyan sweep to win the individual gold. She later became the first woman to retain a 3000-metre junior world title.
Senior Competition and Diamond League
Advancing to senior track competition, Cherono earned a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, finishing behind Meseret Defar. Throughout her career, she participated extensively in the IAAF Diamond League circuit, securing victories at meets including the Herculis, Athletissima, and British Grand Prix. She also recorded personal bests in the 1500, 2000, and 3000-metre distances during her tenure on the circuit.
Olympic and Regional Representation
Cherono represented Kenya at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she placed fourth in the 5000-metre final with a time of 14:42.89. Her background includes training in Kipajit village under the guidance of coach Gabriel Kiptanui and manager Gabriel Rosa.
