Melanie Jayne Chisholm, known professionally as Melanie C, launched her career in 1994 after responding to a casting advertisement in The Stage. Early Development and Training
Born in 1974 in Whiston, United Kingdom, Chisholm attended Fairfield High School in Widnes. She later enrolled at Bird College, where she studied a curriculum comprising singing, dancing, and musical theatre. Her formal education included gaining teaching qualifications in tap and modern theatre dance, providing a technical foundation for her subsequent work in the entertainment industry.

Chisholm became one of the original five members of the Spice Girls alongside Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams, and Emma Bunton. The group signed with Virgin Records in 1995. Their debut album, Spice, attained number one status in over 17 countries and sold 30 million copies worldwide. Following the success of the album Spiceworld and the feature film Spiceworld: The Movie, the group continued to achieve chart success until Halliwell departed in 1998.
Solo Career and Red Girl Records
Following a 1998 collaboration with Bryan Adams on the single When You're Gone, Chisholm released her debut solo album, Northern Star, in 1999. The record sold four million copies globally. She later established her own independent label, Red Girl Records, following the release of her second album, Reason. Her discography has since expanded to include albums such as Beautiful Intentions, The Sea, Stages, Version of Me, and her 2026 release, Sweat.
Industry Recognition
Chisholm has received numerous accolades, including five Brit Awards, three World Music Awards, and ten ASCAP awards. Her 2000 single I Turn to You earned a Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Beyond her musical output, she transitioned into stage acting, making her West End debut in the production Blood Brothers in 2009, an performance which resulted in a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award.
