However, his standing fluctuated as he lost the title to Sharkey in a 1932 split decision. His 1933 defeat by Max Baer led critics to claim he had passed his prime. He later faced Joe Louis in two historic 1936 and 1938 encounters that served as global cultural focal points.
Wartime and Later Life
During the Second World War, Schmeling served as a paratrooper in the German Air Force. He never joined the Nazi Party. Following the conflict, he resumed his athletic career until his permanent retirement in 1948. He later pursued a business career, notably working for The Coca-Cola Company, and maintained a decades-long friendship with Joe Louis until the American boxer's death in 1981.
Legacy and Recognition
Schmeling received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1971.
