Max Horkheimer

German philosopher and sociologist (1895–1973)

The directorship of the Institute for Social Research became Horkheimer’s primary vehicle for redefining critical theory within the twentieth-century academic landscape. By transitioning the organization from a strictly orthodox Marxist study group to a hub for heterodox social investigation, he established a framework for integrating historical materialism with psychological inquiry during a period of global political upheaval.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1895 in the Zuffenhausen district of Stuttgart, Horkheimer was expected to manage the family textile factories. His academic trajectory began in 1919 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München following his release from military service. He later moved to Frankfurt am Main, studying philosophy and psychology under Hans Cornelius. He completed his doctoral dissertation, The Antinomy of Teleological Judgment, before achieving habilitation in 1925 with a work concerning Kant’s Critique of Judgment. During his studies, he formed professional and personal bonds with Friedrich Pollock and Theodor Adorno.

Leading the Frankfurt School

Appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Frankfurt in 1930, Horkheimer assumed leadership of the Institute for Social Research. He successfully reoriented the institution’s research program, focusing on the interplay between history and reason. Under his editorship, the journal Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung became the primary medium for disseminating these theories. However, the ascent of the Nazi party in Germany necessitated the institute's closure. Horkheimer’s academic credentials in Germany were subsequently revoked due to his intellectual alignment with Marxism and his Jewish heritage.

Exile and American Research

Horkheimer relocated the institute to New York City in 1934, securing a partnership with Columbia University. Upon becoming a United States citizen in 1940, he moved to Pacific Palisades, California. There, he authored Dialectic of Enlightenment with Adorno. During this era, he also directed the Scientific Division of the American Jewish Committee, overseeing the 1949 and 1950 publication of the Studies in Prejudice series. His later bibliography includes Eclipse of Reason and his collected works, Gesammelte Schriften.

Final Years

Following his period of exile, Horkheimer eventually returned to Germany. He was appointed as an honorary citizen of Frankfurt am Main and received the Goethe Plaque of the City of Frankfurt in 1953, followed by the Goethe-Plakette des Landes Hessen in 1970. He maintained his academic affiliations at Goethe University Frankfurt until the end of his career. He died in Nuremberg in 1973 at the age of 78.
